Is tipical salentine dance. Salento is a zone in Apulia, South Italy. The salentine hinterland has many beauties, but salento is also rich of traditions and mistery. Pizzica pizzica is a very ancient dance , becouse in the past people think that women who were spiked by a particular spider (tarantula), had hysterical and similar to convulsions movements. The close relatives of the “tarantolata” woman carried her in some squares or in churches, and at the rhythm of pizzica she began to dance in a sort of a frenetic hysteria.

In the modern age studies have shown that the symptoms of tarantolate women were attributable to manifestations of mental and social discomforts, affecting above all the female peasant population of southern Italy.

So if the therapeutic purpose seems to be completely disappeared, the passion and fame of this dance is growing strongly in Italy and in all the word thanks to “Notte della Taranta” too.
The pizzica is a important part of the historical and cultural tradition of Salento, and there are a lot of kind of pizzica, some forgotten. Three are the most important:
