Food and wine route by bike:The places of the flavors of Salento
Starting Point: A Locanda Tù Marchese – Matino (Le)
Route: Matino-Alezio-Gallipoli-SanSimone-Tuglie-Parabita-Matino
Length of the Route: about 35 Km
Difficulty: Medium / Easy
Duration: Full Day
You can not say that you have been in Salento without having tasted its food and wine. In each bike tour, walk, excursion, short stops, you probably will taste Negroamaro or a particular type of cheese, a local productions of liqueurs, different types of oils with friselline and taralli from the oldest bakery of the city, raw fish caught the same morning … and much more.
In partnership with BikeItalia we have chosen some local companies and we have connected them with cycle paths in secondary roads with almost no vehicular traffic.
Starting point is Locanda, and we proceed towards Alezio, where the first stop is at Pastore Bruno, a fresh and seasoned little local shop, home-made products, which preserve a traditional process, carried out by Bruno, Katia, Luigina and Maria.
Time will be spent very fast between the enchantment of abandoned farmhouses and rural churches with magnificent wall painting, and we will go towards Gallipoli following the southern parallel of the provincial road. Our paths will lead us to the historical part of Gallipoli, where we will visit a lot of historical points, transported by the story of a thousand-year-old city, in the past the first in Europe for the traffic of “lampante oil”.
“La Lampara”, a small fish restaurant on the harbor, gives you the opportunity to taste fresh fish, with excellent local wines: highly recommended, you will never forget the taste of this fish! From Gallipoli cycling the crystal clear beaches of Gallipoli, we will arrive in San Simone, at the winery Andrea De Filippo.
Then we will go to Tuglie , in the Provenzano shop, with a centuries-old tradition in the production of typical Salento sweets and ice creams. And again the Tenuta Castellana will welcome us, here we could taste different qualities of extra-virgin olive oil and in Pastificio del Duca we taste some kind of pastas, one of the most famous in the area. From Parabita we then return on bike at A Locanda tu’ Marchese.
Everyone who would like to try this cycling-gastronomic route of the Salento can choose whether to travel independently or guided, and to stop only in some of the places we propose.
